Clark County is the most populous county in Nevada, encompassing Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Boulder City, and surrounding communities. Its court system is correspondingly large, anchored by the Eighth Judicial District Court — the general-jurisdiction trial court for the county — along with multiple justice courts, municipal courts, and a dedicated Family Court division. The Clerk of the Court for the Eighth Judicial District maintains court records dating back to September 1909, with most files from 1990 onward searchable electronically. Records from prior to 1909 must be obtained from Lincoln County, which originally encompassed the territory.

Nevada court records are searchable through a combination of official court portals, clerk offices, and public access terminals. The NevadaCourts.us domain may help users locate publicly available court case information across the state’s judicial system. In Clark County specifically, the Eighth Judicial District Court offers a Smart Search portal for civil, criminal, family, and probate cases, while the Las Vegas Justice Court and various municipal courts operate separate online case inquiry systems. In-person access is available at the Records counter on the third floor of the Regional Justice Center and at the Family Court and Services Center.

How to Look Up a Court Case in Clark County?

The type of court that handled a case determines where and how to search for records. Clark County’s three tiers of courts — District Court, Justice Courts, and Municipal Courts — each maintain their own records and case-search tools.

Eighth Judicial District Court (civil, criminal, family, probate):

  1. Go to the Eighth Judicial District Court portal.
  2. Select “Smart Search”.
  3. Enter the case number or the party’s name in the format Last Name, First Name.
  4. Click “Submit” and review the results, which include docket entries, hearing dates, and case status.

This portal covers District Court civil and criminal cases, all Family Division cases, and Las Vegas Justice Court civil matters. Most records from 1990 to the present are available online.

Las Vegas Justice Court (misdemeanors, small civil claims, evictions, traffic):

  1. Visit the Las Vegas Justice Court case search page or the Clark County Justice Court public access portal.
  2. Choose the search type: civil, criminal, or traffic.
  3. Filter by case number, party name, or attorney.

Las Vegas Municipal Court (city ordinance violations, minor misdemeanors):

Use the case docket search by entering a case number, or search by defendant name through the defendant case history page. For records not available online, submit a records request through the Municipal Court’s website.

In-Person and Mail Requests:

Records can be retrieved at the Records counter on the 3rd floor of the Regional Justice Center during business hours (9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday). A case number is required. Requests can also be mailed to:

Clerk of Court, Attn: Records
200 East Lewis Avenue
Las Vegas, NV 89155

Are Court Records Public in Clark County?

Nevada law presumes that government records are open for public inspection. The Nevada Public Records Act (NPRA), codified primarily in NRS Chapter 239, grants any person the right to inspect or receive copies of public records, including court documents, through written or verbal requests.

However, certain categories of court records are restricted or sealed:

  • Sealed domestic cases: Any file, envelope, or document marked “SEALED BY ORDER OF THE COURT” or “SEALED BY LAW” is not open to public inspection. Attorneys of record and parties to the case may view sealed domestic records with proper identification, except for adoption files, which require a court order for any access.
  • Sealed civil and criminal cases: These require a court order to obtain documents or information.
  • Juvenile records: Generally confidential under Nevada law.
  • Adoption records: Fully restricted; a court order is necessary even for parties to the case.
  • Mental health proceedings: Confidential under state law.
  • Confidential personal information: Social Security numbers and certain financial data may be redacted from public copies.

It is a criminal offense to remove any documents, files, or exhibits from the Clerk’s Office (NRS 239.300). Unsealed admitted evidence may be viewed by appointment only and requires a current, valid, government-issued photo ID.
